Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Red Square, Moscow, Russia + Wallpapers HD

One of the visually most surprising buildings in the world!
The St. Basil Cathedral is located at the end of the Red Square opposite the Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin.

This legendary building is officially called "The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat".

St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in 1555 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. It was completed in 1561. That's pretty much all the genuine history that's known about this celebrated landmark.

The church was dedicated to the protection and intercession of the Virgin, but it came to be known as the Cathedral of Vasily Blazhenny (St. Basil the Beatified) after Basil, the Russian holy fool who was “idiotic for Christ’s sake” and who was buried in the church vaults during the reign (1584–98) of Tsar Fyodor I.

The church was designed by two Russian architects, Posnik and Barma.

In 1918, St. Basil Cathedral was among the first Russian buildings to be taken into custody of the Soviet Government as the monument of Russian and world heritage. It opened as a museum in May 1923, and for the six more years regular church services were held in the Cathedral. Four major renovation works have taken place since 1920s and the Cathedral has been restored to its original shape.

Some of the casing stones that once covered the structure can still be seen around the base. There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid's construction techniques.

Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place.

Statue of Jesus Christ - Christ the Redeemer - Cristo Redentor

Statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The Cristo Redentor is a statue of Jesus of Nazareth in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It is considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. It is 30.1 metres (99 ft) tall, not including its 6 metres (20 ft) pedestal, and 19 metres (62 ft) wide.

It weighs 635 tonnes (625 long,700 short tons), and is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city.

A symbol of Brazilian Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1926 and 1931.

In the 1850s the Vincentian priest Pedro Maria Boss suggested placing a Christian monument on Mount Corcovado to honour Isabel, princess regent of Brazil and the daughter of Emperor Pedro II, although the project was never approved.

In 1921 the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro proposed that a statue of Christ be built on the 2,310-foot (704-metre) summit, which, because of its commanding height, would make it visible from anywhere in Rio. Citizens petitioned Pres. Epitácio Pessoa to allow the construction of the statue on Mount Corcovado.

Colosseum - The Flavius Amphitheatre

The biggest and most imposing amphitheatre in the Roman world!

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire, built of concrete and stone. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.

It's construction started in 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus, with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign (81–96).

Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology.

The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome.

It's one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.

The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur - Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Paris

The Sacré-Cœur is one of the best known Paris monuments. The Sacré-Cœur is also the flagship sight of Montmartre, a lovely and hilly Paris district.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France.

A popular landmark, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city.

Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the supposed excesses of the Second Empire and socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ.

The inspiration for Sacré Cœur's design originated in the wake of the division in French society that arose in the decades following the French Revolution, between devout Catholics and legitimist royalists on one side and democrats, secularists, socialists and radicals on the other.

The Great Wall of China

One of the greatest wonders of the world!

The Great Wall, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance.
Where is the Great Wall of China?
The Great Wall starts from the shanghai pass at the seaside in the Hebei province to the Jiayu pass in Gansu province. The sites of the Great Wall stretch across 15 provinces of China, Tianjin, Qinghai, Shandong and Inner Mongolia, etc.

How was the Great Wall build?
The construction of the Great Wall was mainly depended on human labor. The large stones, earth, wood and bricks were carried on human’s back or lifted by the bar. Simple machines were also used to create the Wall, such as varied handcarts, crowbars and wheels. Animals were also used to transport the materials, just because some sections of the Great Wall were built on the crests, it was hard for a man to carry the heavy materials to these places.

Who built the Great Wall of China?
According to records, Emperor Qin shi huang ordered millions of the people to construct the Great Wall, including the workers, famous, soldiers and slaves.

Why the Great Wall is built?
As early as 7th century BC, Chu dynasty firstly built the Great Wall to stop the invasion from other countries and it opened the curtain of constructing the Great Wall in the history of China. During the Warring States Period, Qi, Wei, Zhao, Qin, Yan and Zhongshan had also built the Great Wall. The Great Wall was the greatest military defense project in the history, and it was also the guarantee of the peace and stability of ancient society and agriculture.

Can the Great Wall be seen from the outer space?
The Great Wall is great, but you can’t see it from the space. The average width of the Great Wall is no more than 10 meters, and it can be easily hidden by the surroundings. It is difficult to see it from 20km high by naked eye, not to say 400km from the spacecraft.

London's Tower Bridge

LONDON'S TOWER BRIDGE

London's Tower Bridge is one of the most recognizable bridges in the world. Its Victorian Gothic style stems from a law that forced the designers to create a structure that would be in harmony with the nearby Tower of London.

London Bridge refers to several bridges that have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London.

The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a box girder bridge constructed from concrete and steel. It replaced a 19th-century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure. This was preceded by a succession of timber bridges the first was built by the Roman founders of London.

The current bridge still stands at the western end of the Pool of London but it is positioned 30 metres (98 ft) upstream from the original alignment.

The traditional ends of the medieval bridge were marked by St Magnus-the-Martyr on the northern bank and Southwark Cathedral on the southern shore. Until Putney Bridge opened in 1729, London Bridge was the only road-crossing of the Thames downstream of Kingston-upon-Thames.

The modern bridge is owned and maintained by Bridge House Estates, an independent charity overseen by the City of London Corporation. The A3, which it carries, is maintained by the Greater London Authority.

The crossing also delineates an area along the southern bank of the River Thames, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, that has been designated as a business improvement district.
